How to Be Ready for a Professional Organizer

You’re sick of how things look around you and decided it’s time to hire a professional organizer. Your kitchen, playroom, closet, etc., is a disaster. We believe anyone is capable of organizing their space on their own, but as with any other service, sometimes it’s worth it to get the extra help!

So you took the first step and decided to hire a professional organizer, and the dream starts to feel like it’s within reach. But what now? How do you prepare? Here are five things to know before a professional organizer arrives to turn your mess into a masterpiece.

1 | The job starts with an in-home consultation.

After your initial phone consultation is completed, we schedule an in-home consultation. Before a professional organizer can conquer your clutter, they need to see the space and understand your vision. An in-home consultation will involve talking about your goals for the area, as well as taking pictures and measurements.

If you have specific design ideas, it helps to have pictures to be sure you’re on the same page. You can discuss the types of products you want to use in the space and any design elements like color or style. You will receive an estimated time to complete the project and after the paperwork is signed, we will get you on schedule.

2 | Be clear about your budget.

It’s essential to be realistic and up-front about your budget. The total cost will include organizational supplies and products, as well as time spent on product research, shopping, and of course, actually organizing the space.

When you’re clear about your budget, it allows your organization to plan correctly for the space and the time spent working on it.

3 | Be prepared to let things go gratefully.

To get a disorganized space under control, there’s a good chance some items need to be thrown out, donated, or relocated. As much as your organizer would love to be able to, they can’t create a room where it doesn’t exist, so purging unneeded or unwanted stuff is key to eliminating clutter.

It will save time if you thoroughly purge the space before a professional organizer arrives, especially if sentimental items are involved. However, if you have a difficult time getting rid of things, your organizer is happy to help with the decluttering process.

4 | Give your organizer a clear picture of the space in full use.

It’s a good idea to make sure your space is in full use if you want to get the best organizing system in place. A half-empty pantry or closet doesn’t show an accurate picture of how the space is used. Before a professional organizer arrives, go grocery shopping, or do all the laundry so they can plan accordingly.

5 | Be realistic about your expectations.

We all get excited when we see a Pinterest dream pantry or dream closet, those spaces look beautifully organized and we want your home to look the same, but it’s important to set realistic expectations for your own space based on your home and budget. The most important part of the job is making the space function well. For example, is it a priority for all your garage bins to match, or do you want to save money and use what you already have? Do you want your dry goods decanted into containers, or are you okay storing items in the original packaging?

A professional organizer will find supplies to match your style and budget. This will be the top priority for your organizer as they work on your design plan.
